In chapter 1 pip goes to visit the graveyard as his parents are there then an escaped convict approaches and intimidates him. Then he tells him to get him food and a file as he has an iron around his leg. The man threatens pip with a man which he cant see and this intimidates pip.  Pip goes home to his sister and her husband the black smith. She is shown to be a bully. Pip waits till dawn then he steals the things requested.
